The Calendar Says It's Spring

Well, the calendar says it's spring even if the upstate NY weather hasn't sprung!  It's still cold, but our days are busy and full.  Recently I enjoyed a little escape with Sierra as we headed to the western part of NY to visit Houghton College.  She loved it - even if it is 4 1/2 hours away.  She's already been accepted there for the fall, but we're looking at a couple more.  I guess that means more road trips are pending!
Houghton Or Bust!

The little boys are getting cabin fever.  They keep escaping to Daddy's garage and dragging various items of interest into the house.  The other day Jordan actually used plexiglass and wood dowels and built this little table.  Slava decided to enjoy his snack on it.

Great Grandmothers with Iona!
I love this pic of my mom (on left) and my mother-in-law (on right) holding their great-granddaughter!  This is a precious picture to me.  My mom has been ill and my mother-in-law had a hip replacement the same day the baby was born!

Legislative Day in Albany, NY
Crystal Langdon, of Crystal Clear Finances invited me to share her table at Leg Day 2014 so I could represent Justice For Orphans there.  Crystal is responsible for me being on the radio for the very first time a few years ago.  That led to our radio show on The New Light WDCD in Albany, and then the Lord opened the door further for us to be on The Sound of Life also.  Two exciting radio developments:  (1) all of our past Orphans No More shows are now on our website  http://justicefororphansny.org just click on "Events" and then "Radio Show"!  (2) WDCD just added another time slot for or show!  We are now on 1:30pm Fridays, 10:30am Sundays, and 1:30pm Wednesdays!
Miss Iona & Aunt Sierra
This little blessing is getting bigger! She's almost 2 months old already!  She's looking around and checking everyone out - and there are a lot of us to check out!
Uncle Curtis!
Iona would like to announce that her Uncle Curtis made the Dean's list at RPI this quarter!

Grammy & Iona
Wednesday nights are my "date nights" with my grand baby!  I love this special time to visit with Wayne Jr., Kerri, and the baby.
Grammy Love!

Can you tell I'm loving being a grandma?

Winter Wanderings

As we wander through this snowy, white winter there are a few things warming our days!  Mainly the joy we are experiencing as we get to know our newest little family member:  my very first grand daughter, Iona Elizabeth.  Though I've given birth to 3 of my own babies, there is something extra-special about a grand child.  I can't explain the desire to just sit and watch her...preferably with me holding her, but even if someone else cradles this treasure it's enough to just gaze at her preciousness!  She is the first-born of my first-born!  And my son will FaceTime with me on occasion and I get to see him handling his baby girl like he's handled a dozen babies even though she's his very first.  I am in grateful awe to my Abba Daddy that I get to see my son be an amazing daddy already.

Newborn Photo Shoot - this one is my favorite!

Her daddy sucked his thumb too!

Hi, Grammy!

Iona & Aunt Anna!

Ok, ok, enough baby pics!  There have been other things going on in our family.  In the midst of tons of snow, we have been homeschooling, playing, running Slava to OT, PT and Speech, gearing up for a huge event for Justice For Orphans, and bringing my mom to her doctor appointments and blood transfusions.
Jordan built a "fire"!

Anna sprained her wrist snowboarding...
...and that was before the Olympics!

Happy Valentine's Day!
My Valentines:  Sierra, Anna, Jordan, & Slava
For Valentine's Day I found these chocolate "gold medals" for the kids.  I played the Olympic theme song on my I-phone while they lined up and I gave them all gold medals for being the best kids in the world!  They got a kick out of it!  Andrii was not home at the time because he was out plowing the 2 feet of snow that fell.

I'll be doing a post soon to update on Justice For Orphans' upcoming events!  God is doing amazing things!

New Year - New Seasons

Welcome to the New Year!  It started out very interesting as New Year's Eve day my mom was taken to the hospital.  She's had a blood disorder for many years where her bone marrow over produced blood.  It over produced so much that now it's burnt out and can no longer produce enough.  From this point on she will need regular blood transfusions.  I'm her advocate, and her daughter of course, and I will be taking her to all of her appointments.  This is a new season in our lives.  Prayer is appreciated and God is faithful.

Andrii (center) and buddies Ben and Evan.
Andrii ventured up to our camp in the Adirondacks with a couple buddies to do some snowboarding just before Christmas.  Looks like they had fun!

Justified!
Sierra trying out Andrii's new gun.  Yup, that's right.  She's shooting guns.  Just another day in the life of this homeschooling family!
Anna & Avalon
Anna has been enjoying bonding with her horse, Avalon.  She's been going over to the ranch twice a week for riding lessons and hands on grooming etc.  She's a happy girl.  It looks like they both are!

Slava in his weighted blanket!
We got Slava a weighted blanket for Christmas.  Weighted blankets are recommended for kids with Sensory Processing Disorder.  He really likes it.  When he's having a hard time managing himself, we wrap him up burrito-style and have him chill out for 5 minutes.  It seems to help.  Now if we can only get him to stop hitting/kicking and saying "stupid" all the time.  Slava's a lot of work, but worth every minute of it!
Jordan and his new skates!
The pond is frozen over and that means ice hockey!  The kids  have been hosting games every chance they get.  Our pond is a popular place this time of year.

Slava - Cool Dude at the Dentist!

I took the little boys for dental cleanings and couldn't resist snapping this picture while Slava was in the chair!  Both boys had improved brushing, but both still needed a filling each.  Basically Jordan's mouth is a mess.  He'll need lots of orthodontics in the near future.  Fun, fun.

Other things going on - this past weekend Curtis moved into his own apartment.  This is a new season for us.  He's almost 22, but it's still bittersweet for this stay-at-home/home schooling mama.  He didn't move far, but it's still an adjustment for us.  I suspect he's enjoying some peace and quiet, something our house has little of!

We're anxiously awaiting the arrival of our grand daughter!  As I type this, Kerri has 3 weeks to her due date!  With everything that's been going on, I am looking forward to the arrival of my very first grandchild and the joy she will bring to our family!

Justice For Orphans, our ministry, has been moving and growing.  We've got some exciting events planned for 2014 along with the theme:  Love In Action.  The radio shows have been going great, we've got some fundraising events planned, and a huge foster care-focused event in the works for May.  Stay tuned for more details or visit justicefororphansny.org to learn more.

A More Restful Week

This week I put into practice my plan to take back control of our family calendar.  My plan is to block off every other week as a "no appointment" week.  Aside from the routine stuff (church, karate, piano, etc.) I'm not booking any doctor or dentist appts, unless it's an emergency of course.  So this week was blissful (almost) since I didn't have to run anyone anywhere for anything.  In fact, aside from taking Slava to OT on Monday, and running the kids to karate on Thursday, I never left the house!  I even had our groceries delivered.  It helped that Sierra was away for the week because I didn't have to run her to work or piano and due to a snow storm Slava's PT was cancelled.  It felt so good to have a respite from the running.  This week I'm taking my mom to a doctor appt, and Slava has a doctor and dentist appointment too.  But I have the following week to look forward to which has no appointments scheduled.  I'm thrilled with this plan!
Where'd the snow go?
We've had this little snowmobile since Sierra was little.  Wheels can be added for when there's not enough snow.  Slava loves it!  I think we have a future racer on our hands!
Paint the Box
On Monday Andrii & Anna joined the youth group for a day of snow boarding.  This left me home alone with Slava & Jordan.  While trying to keep Slava out of trouble while doing school with Jordan, I busted out the paints so he could paint the big box.  Hey, desperate times call for desperate measures!  Of course Jordan was more interested in painting then phonics!

"40-80 Inches"
Structured, hands-on activities are the best for keeping little Slava's out of trouble.  His OT therapist suggested the game "Letter School" to work on fine motor skills and letter/number writing practice.  I down-loaded it on my I-Pad.  Slava loves it...probably because it's interactive and the letters blow up like fireworks if he forms them correctly.  Works for me!
 More hands-on fun with Bend-a-roos!
Slava loves to play with these waxy, bendy sticks when we're at the social worker's office.  They're actually pretty inexpensive, so I ordered a bunch online.
Snow Day!
By now we're all pretty much done with winter, but we got more snow this week anyway.  At least it sent the little boys out to play on Friday.  I looked out the window and discovered Jordan on our little car with a snow shovel.  He'd climbed up there with a stool from Daddy's garage.  He cleaned the whole thing off for me.
Bend-a-roo creations!

 Behavior Chart Buddies
We've been really struggling with the little boys' behavior.  Jordan has turned into this loud little boy who seems to yell all the time.  He also needs work on obedience, chores, cooperation, and overall attitude.  Slava has been especially frustrating lately with his words.  He keeps saying works like "stupid" "you guys are mean" "you guys are jerks" "be quiet" "shut up" etc.  The more I correct him, the more he says them.  He also has a hard time with impulse control (just ask our dog) and obedience.  I've been thinking about doing some kind of behavior chart and Wayne said to do it.  We started on Friday.  I designed my own reproducible chart and filled in the chores and behaviors they need to work on.  They earn stickers daily for success and x's for wrong behavior.  Three x's in an area means no sticker for that box.  At bedtime we review their chart and if they earned enough little stickers throughout the day, they then get a gold star for the day.  If they get 7 gold starts for the week they get the reward they were working towards.  At the beginning of the week they get to choose their reward to work towards.  This week Jordan wants a step ladder that Daddy has out in the garage and Slava wants a dust-buster little vacuum.  Weird kids, I know!  But if the behavior improves, which it did the very first day, it's worth it!

Snow People!
Hopefully this was our last "hurrah"in the snow.  At least the kids like it.  Here Anna (right) and her best friend Mary show off their snow creations.
Shore Show Off
While we were all suffering in the snowy northeast, Sierra was basking on the beach in SC.  She was gone a full week, but we saw her everyday on Face Time.  As I type this she just arrived home about an hour ago.  At least her trip has inspired the rest of us snowbirds.  We're considering a family trip to the ocean.  Our Ukrainian kids have never been to the ocean.  I've talked about going the past couple years but we've never done it.  This morning Wayne & I looked on a map because any trip we take he'd like to combine with a trip to the Creation Museum which is on the boarder of Ohio and Kentucky.  No ocean near there but drive due east and we could run right into Virginia Beach (after crossing West Virginia and Virginia)!  It's become a family discussion so we might just take the plunge sometime in June when Curtis and Wayne & Kerri will be finished with school.

My Baby Girl
It just dawned on me that in September, Sierra will begin her senior year of high school.  She's been homeschooled her whole life and this year has been doing college courses online with Liberty University.  By the time she graduates from high school she will have earned an Associates of Arts in Psychology degree.  It amazes me...and I'm still not ready for it.  Associates degree or not, I might just hold her back this year.  I'm not ready to let her go!  Sweet-bitter-sweet.

I Cannot Do This

Our pond continues to be the winter hang out place.  Sierra and Andrii have been hosting ice hockey parties with our church youth group.
The gang's all here!
 Night hockey under the lights!
l-r:  Anna, Sierra, Curtis, with Jordan standing.
How gave that kid a stick?
Even Jordan and Slava have been getting in on the action!  Somehow Slava made it out onto the ice without his skates.  He does wear them, I should know, I have to put them on him about 10 times a day!
Keeping warm by the fire!
It's been so cold, but the fire makes it nice.  I, however, stay in my nice cozy house during these games.  I did manage to make about 20 cups of cocoa and deliver them to the frozen youth.  Then I fled back into the warmth of my cabin!
Lego Maniacs!
My computer keeps posting my pictures out of order.  I haven't figured out why.  Here Slava & Jordan (who suddenly became camera-shy) were sorting through our Lego collection with Daddy.  We've got Legos from the years Curtis (now almost 21) was a Lego maniac.  Then Andrii took up the slack when Curtis got too old to play.  Actually, I do still catch Curt in the Lego bucket with the little boys at times.  Now Jordan has reached the age where he can actually build things himself.  Basically Slava just likes to throw them!
Daddy's (or should I say Jordan's) New Toy

Anna & Slava Writing On the Walls!
I'm always looking for ways to help improve Slava's fine motor skills.  And with all the ice cold weather we've been having, the kids are always looking for something to do.  This week I hung up a long piece of brown paper and the kids drew with markers all over it.  It kept them entertained for a little while.  This week Wayne & I took Slava to his appointment with a developmental pediatrician.  It took us 6 months to get this appointment.  We didn't learn anything that we already didn't know, but this was the doctor to officially diagnose what we already suspected.  So it's official.  Slava has Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.  Yup.  That's it.  Straight across the board from the physical features, growth rate, and behavior he fit all the categories.  Of course we knew this, but having it formally diagnosed was still heart breaking.  Continuously consuming large amounts of alcohol during pregnancy damages the brain of a developing baby.  FASD is really a type of brain damage.  It is very commonly found in children adopted from Eastern Europe.  So, we knew this was a possibility with any of our kids from Ukraine.  Jordan most likely has it.  He has some of the physical features, ADD, and even the scoliosis can be caused by it.  But Slava has it more extensively.  There is hope for him, lots of hope.  He's smart, already beginning to read, understand math concepts, and is over all doing great in Kindergarten (considering he's 7).  We're used to such delays with these kids from hard places.  In Slava's case, FASD really manifests in his behavior, reasoning, planning, decision making, etc.  All of this makes our job of parenting him draining, even frustrating, but always worth it!  On the hardest days (when I think "I cannot do this") I remind myself of a few things.  #1-God called us to this and when He calls, He equips.  And the Lord rarely calls us to do easy things that we can do on our own.  He calls us to just say "yes" and let Him do the impossible through us.  When I have remember this, I've experienced His faithfulness in spite of my failures.  #2-I remind myself of where these kids would be if we had chosen the easy, cushy life instead of God's will.  I am gravely aware of the statistics of kids in Ukrainian orphanages who never get adopted and age out of the system.  They end up on the street, living a life of crime and poverty.   The boys end up in crime, drugs, and jail.  Most commit suicide.  The girls are prime targets of traffickers who force them into sexual slavery.  So no matter how hard my hardest day might be, it's nothing compared to the future our kids would have faced if they had not been adopted.  #3 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:  to look after orphans and widows in their distress...James 1:27.  This is not optional.
Curtis and the Hockey Crew

I love seeing Curtis and the big kids involved in the hockey games.  And Wayne is always out there with them too.  This week he even purchased some nice new goals and some skates for himself.

Jordan is on the ice!

To add to the craziness of life, Wayne and I signed up for foster parenting classes that Justice For Orphans is hosting at our church.  We want to be able to do respite for relatives who will be fostering and, since JFO advocates for adoption and foster care, we feel it is important for us to be educated on the process.  Plus I figure we'll learn something new.  Presently we don't have a bed for another child, but one day down the road that might change.

I've been reading an excellent book that Mary told me about.  Kisses From Katie is about a young woman who felt the call of God to go to Uganda right out of high school.  By the time she was 21 she'd adopted 14 little girls and was called "Mommy" by hundreds of others who she demonstrated the Gospel to by feeding, educating, and meeting their medical needs.  Katie has reminded me that I cannot do this.  Only God can.  Lately I've been feeling a bit cranky about all the running:  doctor appt, dentist appt, OT, PT, get milk, drop this one off at work, get this one to a birthday party, pick this one up from work, get groceries, make dinner, run to church, run to karate, do school, pay bills, clean this, organize that, whine, whine, whine.  The crankiness comes from trying to do it all in my own strength.  Meanwhile nothing ever really gets done and I end up way behind and very tired....and cranky.  Not the way I want to be.  Katie reminds me that I'm not able to do it all.  Only the Lord can do it.  He just chooses to use us.  I'd been forgetting that.  So when I got up in the morning I'd be nonstop until I crashed at the end of the day, exhausted, tired, and way behind in my responsibilities.  So, I've had to repent of my prideful attitude.  Katie reminds me:
164.8 million needy children.  And though at first glance that looks like a big number, 2.1 billion people on this earth proclaim to be Christians.  The truth is that if only 8 percent of the Christians would care for one more child, there would not be any statistics left....
....People are people.  They all need food and water and medicine, but mostly they need love and truth and Jesus.  I can do that.  We can do that.  We can give people food, water, medicine, love, truth, and Jesus.  The same God created all of us for a purpose, which is to serve Him and to love and care for His people.  It is universal.....
.....Adoption is a redemptive response to tragedy that happens in this broken world.  And every single day, it is worth it, because adoption is God's heart.
From the book Kisses From Katie by Katie Davis.
Thank you Katie.  And thank you, Jesus!
